Marion Terry Key was born on June 12, 1917, in Lamesa and died Nov. 8, 2004, in Lubbock, at the age of 87. Marion grew up in Lamesa and attended McMurray College before transferring to the University of Texas, where he received his L.L.B. in 1941. After graduating from law school, he began the practice of law in Lubbock that same year.

He joined the United States Army Air Corps in June 1942, received training at the Lubbock Army Airfield, and subsequently attended Officer Candidacy School. Marion served on the personal staff of four-star General Carl Spaatz and served as an intelligence officer with top security clearance. He worked in the war room in London, England, traveled across France and Germany as a part of General Spaatz's staff, and later served in Guam.

He achieved the rank of Captain, receiving a Bronze Star for his service in the war. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Lubbock and re-established his law practice, actively practicing law fo r over 55 years. On Oct.12, 1946, he married Mary Ellis Maedgen.

They recently celebrated 58 years together. His civic activities include being a former member of the following: the Board of Trustees of Methodist Hospital and Lubbock Methodist Hospital Foundation; the Board of Directors of Lubbock National Bank; President of the Lubbock Country Club and Lubbock Club; President of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Board of City Development, and Retail Merchants Association; Lubbock Symphony Board of Trustees, serving as Chairman; the Administrative Board and Finance Committee of First United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman for both; the Chancel Choir; The University of Texas at Austin McDonald Observatory Advisory Council; the Executive Committee Chancellor's Council of the University of Texas System; the Rotary Club of Lubbock; Board of Trustees of the Texas Tech Law School Foundation, serving as Vice Chairman.

Marion was a life member of the Ex-Student Association of the University of Texas. He was appointed by Governor John Connally to the three-member Texas Department of Public Safety Commission, serving as Chairman.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellis Key; son, Terry S. Key and wife Charlene and their daughter, Lauren; son, Roger A. Key and wife Ann and their children, Katie, Alan, and Allison; son, Howard W. Key and wife Sarah and their children, Benjamin, Courtney, and Andrew; son, Charles E. Key and wife Paula and their children, Chase and Carolyn; brother, Luther Key, M.D. of Albany, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. Private burial will follow at City of Lubbock Cemetery.
