The 1920 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 40 Y/O Dr. William Charles Farrar, Sr., a physician born in GA, and his 30 Y/O wife, Beatrice Martha (Abercrombie) Farrar. Also living in the household were their children: 8 Y/O Frances Hardwick Farrar and 6 Y/O Gresham Talmadge Farrar.

Frances Hardwick Farrar grew up in the Woodlawn and East Lake sections of Birmingham, AL. She was the daughter of a local prominent physician and first attended Woodlawn Elementary School and Gulf Park Academy (Gulf Coast Girl's School). She then attended Woodlawn High School of Birmingham, AL for one semester and completed her pre-college education at the Loulie Compton Seminary, a private girl's prep school, located in the 5 Points section of Birmingham. Frances is pictured in the Loulie Compton Seminary yearbook, "La Vie" in 1926, 1927 and 1928 as a sophomore, junior and a senior, respectively (see attached photo). She then matriculated into Howard College, a small Baptist supported institution, located near her parent's home in the East Lake section of Birmingham, AL (Howard College was moved to a new site in Birmingham in 1957 and renamed Samford University.

The 1930 US Census of Precinct 56, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 50 Y/O Dr. William Charles Farrar, Sr., a physician born in GA, and his 40 Y/O wife, Beatrice Martha (Abercrombie) Farrar. Also living in the household were their children: 19 Y/O Frances Hardwick Farrar and 17 Y/O Gresham Talmadge Farrar.

While a student at Howard College, Frances was attracted to a flamboyant football player named Hubert Leroy "Steve" Stevens. After a short courtship, they were married on 05 Dec 1931 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. The marriage document of 24 Y/O Hubert Stevens and 21 Y/O Frances Farrar is extant.

The marriage resulted in the birth of a daughter, Shirley Farrar Stevens, on 08 Oct 1932 in Birmingham, AL but the marriage was a tumultuous one resulting in the young couple separating and Steve moving back to Texas. He returned from time to time to Birmingham, and the marriage was on-again, off-again for a few years but prior to 1937 they were divorced (see 1940 Census below). Steve married Maxine Vanderstucken prior to 1937 (Click here: Maxine Vanderstucken Armstrong). Steve and Maxine V. Stevens moved to Long Beach, California where Steve went into the retail tire business in 1937 located at 1602 East Anaheim. The 1937 thru 1939 Long Beach, California City Directories confirm that Steve and Maxine were living there as husband and wife during this period. His marriage to Maxine lasted until circa 1940 with the resulting divorce costing him his tire business. He had returned from time to time to Birmingham, AL to visit his first wife, Frances, and their daughter, Shirley, who were living with Frances' parents.

The 1940 US Census of Precinct 56, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 60 Y/O Dr. William Charles Farrar, Sr., a physician born in GA, and his 50 Y/O wife, Beatrice Martha (Abercrombie) Farrar. Also living in the household were their children: 27 Y/O divorced Gresham Talmadge Farrar, a gasoline station attendant and their 28 Y/O divorced daughter, Frances Hardwick (Farrar) Stevens. Also in the household was Frances (Farrar) Stevens' 7 Y/O daughter, Shirley Farrar Stevens.

At some point Steve and Frances, during a "permanent" reconciliation, remarried to each other on 29 Dec 1941 at Frederick, Tillman Co., OK (NOTE: This was very shortly after the beginning of WWII). The extant marriage license recorded Steve's residence as Long Beach, Los Angeles Co., CA and Frances' residence as Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. Following the wedding, they packed up and moved to Texas taking their 9 Y/O daughter, Shirley, with them. The little family lived in Texas for several months before moving on to northern California where they started farming in the Central Valley. When World War II ended in 1945, Steve moved his family down to Southern California where another child, a son, was born on 21 Jan 1946 in Long Beach, CA. Being the entrepreneur he was, with his previous experience in the tire business in the same area, Steve went back into the retail tire business, opening his own shop, Anaheim Tire Service, in Long Beach. During World War II, rubber although not in short supply, was used mainly by the military resulting in civilian tires being in very short supply. The civilian retail tire business was essentially shut down during the war. When Steve went back into the tire business in 1946, the supply of tires was increasing as well as the availability of new automobiles. He operated his shop very successfully and later he incorporated a Firestone store under the roof of the tire shop. In addition, he owned and managed several apartment complexes in the Long Beach area.

The 1969 Long Beach, California City Directory recorded Hubert L. Stevens and his wife, Frances (Farrar) Stevens proprietors of Anaheim Tire Service and residing at 5554 East 6th Street.

Steve died prematurely of a heart attack at age of 62 in 1970. Following his untimely death, Frances managed the Firestone Tire business for a couple of years then sold it.

Frances Hardwick (Farrar) Stevens was the 4th cousin 3 times removed of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) through her father, William Charles Farrar, Sr. (See Find A Grave Memorials Mark Twain and Mark Twain.

Frances Hardwick (Farrar) Stevens was the 1st cousin 3 times removed of Pleasant Riggs Crump, who had the distinction of being recognized as the last surviving Civil War Confederate Veteran when he died on 31 Dec 1951. Among other notable events, he was at Appomattox Courthouse to witness the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee. See Find A Grave Memorial #13397843.
