Joseph married Martha Gibbs, 19 Feb 1854 in Islington St Mary, Islington Upper Holloway, London, England. They immigrated to America that same year and first settled in Stow, Summit, OH. They had 9 children:

-Sarah J Francis (1854-1939)
-Charles R Francis (1855-1937)
-Joseph Gibbs Francis (1857-1937)
-Katherine Ida "Kate" Francis (1859-1943)
-Harry H Francis (1861-bef.1943)
-Frank Francis (abt.1864-bef.1943)
-Anna M Francis (1865-1961)
-William Francis (1871-1871)
-Flora M Francis (1873-1952)

In 1857 the family was in Canada, where their son Joseph was born, but they returned to Stow, OH that same year, where they were still living in 1860. By 1870 the family had moved to Akron, OH, where Joseph and Martha remained until Martha's death.

Joseph worked as a laborer, a farmer, and later in life as a miller with his son Joseph.

Joseph & Martha's last known address was: 1076 S. Main St. Akron, OH 44311, where they were listed on 1900 census, living with the family of their daughter Sarah.

According to the "Summit County, Ohio, Death Records, 1866-1908," Joseph died in Pittsburgh, PA, on 8 Nov 1907, which conflicts with his headstone and with cemetery records.
