Army Officer. The grandson of Lieutenant General S.B.M. Young and son of Major General George Windle Read, he was a Cadet at the United States Military Academy from 1908 to 1909. He then enlisted in the Army, and attained the rank of Sergeant before receiving his commission in 1912. He was a Captain during World War I and continued his service after the war, receiving promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in 1935 and Colonel in 1942. His brother George W. Read, Jr. (1900-1974) was a Lieutenant General who commanded the U.S. Army Armor Center and the Second United States Army.
