Gladys A. Clement, 95, died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street with burial following in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Copiah County. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Reverend Tom Washburn will officiate.
Gladys Clement was the youngest of five children born to William Algernon and Nora Osborn Clement of Terry, Mississippi. Her siblings, who preceded her in death, were Sheldon, Lenna, Wilma (Gladney), and Idelle (Boone).
Miss Clement was a graduate of Terry High School and Mississippi State College for Women (now Mississippi State University for Women) and did graduate study at the University of Alabama.
She taught high school English for five years, including two years at Edwards, Mississippi. Later she accepted a position with Holland and Gates insurance company in Jackson, and during World War II when many men were in military service, she became the first woman in the state to work as a map clerk.
She then began a twenty-year career as secretary and assistant to Dr. W. Douglas Hudgins, pastor of First Baptist Church in Jackson. The staff consisted of only six members at that time, and for a number of years Miss Clement also served as youth director.
At the retirement of Dr. Hudgins, she joined Bryan Tours, a travel agency then being established by another Baptist minister, Dr. Clyde Bryan. For twenty- two years she held positions as secretary, office manager, and tour escort, traveling to many parts of the world. Her last and most interesting trip was to Egypt, where she led a cruise on the Nile River and a visit to the pyramids.
After retirement, Miss Clement became a volunteer with the International Department at First Baptist Church. For fifteen years, she taught a Sunday Bible class and a weekday class in Conversational English. When her students returned to their own countries, she often kept in touch with them by email.
At the time of her illness, Miss Clement was a resident of Sunnybrook Estates in Madison.
Miss Clement is survived by a nephew, Howard E. Boone and wife Bethany of Madison, and three nieces—Fentress Boone Waits and husband Jim of Atlanta, Brenda Clement Wilson and husband Bill of Wilmington, Delaware, and Beverly Clement Barnett of Franklin, N.C.
