The son of John & Barbara (Hossler) Gantz, he married - reportedly - Lydia Miller ca. 1841 and fathered John Wesley (b. 04/01/42 - his death certificate list his mother as Leah Jane Flory), Margaret Ann (b. 01/16/45), and Susanna (b. 12/22/47 - married Adam Eghner or Eichner). Lydia died in 1850, and he married Lucinda Ziegler, née Kerlinger, October 5, 1851, in York, Pennsylvania, fathering Elizabeth A. (b. @1853 - married L. R. Lentz), Belinda (b. 08/22/54, d. 11/09/67), Ellen (b. 07/15/57, d. 10/22/60), Alice Ann (b. 08/15/60 - married George Bollinger and a Delle), Samuel (b. 07/28/62), and Amelia (b. 09/11/64 - married Charles H. Allison). In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Shrewsbury Township, York County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of forty-two in York County November 9, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November November 11 as a private with Co. K, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.

In 1890, he was living in Glen Rock, York County.
