For a period of 61 years, starting in May 1891 and finishing on 21 Nov 1952, he worked as a printer for first the Die Union, then the Leader and finally the News Leader, and is in large measure responsible for the success of these papers. During these years he set type by hand for both the German and English papers, and with the installation of a type setting machine in 1905, he became the operator of that machine. At one time he was setting type for three papers each week, each in a different language. They were the two mentioned above and the Schweizerfround, a Swiss paper printed for a St. Louis firm. He acquired the reputation as being one of the fastest and best ad setters in the trade.
