Jacob was a Universalist Minister and was an early missionary to North Carolina.
Jacob was a Mason, he was Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island in 1831.
In 1837 he was Clerk of the Rhode Island General Assembly.
Later in life he served as private secretary to the US Senator from R.I., William Sprague, for a part of his term, 1863-75.

He wrote quite a lot in his life including:

A CONCISE HISTORY, OF THE EFFORTS TO OBTAIN AN EXTENSION OF SUFFRAGE IN RHODE ISLAND; FROM THE YEAR 1811 TO 1842

A Dissertation on the Subjects of Death, The General Judgement, and Future Interminable Punishment (1831

An Inquiry into the Causes, Extent, and Present and Final Consequences of Clerical Influence in This Country (1833)

Wrote for the Republican Herald in Providence

In 1844-45 he co-edited the Christian Warrior, a Universalist weekly in Richmond, VA

He became a R.I. political journalist after his retirement.
