That same year he became a charter member of the Rowlett's Creek Baptist church. The quiet farm life of Mr. Witt was interrupted by the breaking out of the Civil War, but it was not until 1863 that he enlisted and entered Capt. Throckmorton's Company, Stone Regiment, in Magruder's command, and served in Louisiana and Arkansas chiefly until the close of the war.
