Hogan was the tenth child of a family of thirteen. When but five years of age, Hogan was taken by his parents to Greene County, Illinois, and there he lived until 1844, when he came to Texas. In 1846 he located a headright of 320 acres 13 miles southwest of McKinney on which he lived the rest of his life.
Having improved the raw land to some extent, Mr. Witt served eleven months in the Mexican War in 1847. In August, 1848, he married Miss Louisa Rattan. That same year he became a charter member of the Rowlett's Creek Baptist church. The quiet farm life of Mr. Witt was interrupted by the breaking out of the Civil War, but it was not until 1863 that he enlisted and entered Capt. Throckmorton's Company, Stone Regiment, in Magruder's command, and served in Louisiana and Arkansas chiefly until the close of the war. To his marriage were born six children: Laura A., John W., Lucy, William E. Orleana C. and Mary J.
