"Bertinius Gudmundson Derdall was born near Stravanger, Norway on December 4, 1879. His parents were Karen and Gudimund Nedrebo Derdall.

He left his home in Norway in about 1900 and came to his sisters in Rochelle, Illinois who are Mrs. Rasmus (Kari) Finnestad and Mrs. Bertel (Sikki) Finnestad.

In 1902, together with his brothers Thomas and Engvald, they decided to come to Canada, landing in Hanley, North West Territories. He applied for land NE 30-30-7 west of Hanley on which he homesteaded in June of 1903 and lived there until he retired to Outlook in 1948." (p. 670).
