Eugene was born in Bridgewater, CT to Isaac and Sarah (Cole) Babbitt. As a young boy he helped his father on the family farm and also with his carpentry work. Eugene was a top student and graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy at Andover and then Harvard in 1886. He spent the next few years as a student at the Universities of Berlin, Paris and Copenhagen. Later, as a teacher and educator, he taught at Greenwood Public School in CT, Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia, Rutgers, and after 1905 he was a professor at Dartmouth College for many years. He received his PhD. in Classical Languages from Harvard. Howard married Mary Brigham King in 1891, a daughter of George Augustus and Martha Ann (Brigham) King and had three children, but his during his married life he had much misfortune. His youngest child, Charles died in 1900, His wife Mary died in 1912, and his daughter Margaret died in 1920. In his final years, Eugene was living alone in a Boston, MA rooming house, working as a translator of Ancient Greek manuscripts. He died in Boston, MA in 1927 and was buried at the old Babbitt family Plot in Center Cemetery in Bridgewater, CT. Most of his family are interred there.
Other members of the Babbitt family are buried in the newer section of Center Cemetery at the other Babbitt family plot.
