Lt. Col. Anna Georgena Anderson, the first woman from west of the Mississippi to join the United States Army, died August 5, 1971 in a local Salt Lake nursing home. Miss Anderson graduated from Branch Normal College in Cedar City and the University of Utah. For three years she was an instructor at Brigham Young University.
On November 5, 1925, Miss Anderson joined the U.S. Army Nursing Corps and received her training at the Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Miss Anderson graduated from Walter Reed in 1928. Her first post was Director of Pediatrics and Obstetrical nursing at Phildadelphia General Hospital. She also served at Army hospitals in Virginia and Oklahoma.
She was head anesthetist at Letterman Gneral Hospital in Presidio of San Franciscoo and Camp Polk, Louisiana. Miss Anderson had tours of duty at Billings General Hospital; Indianapolis; Fort Ord, California and served as chief nurse at Sternberg General Hospital in Manila and Schofield General Hospital in Hawaii.
Miss Anderson was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel during World War II.
