Robert McFarland Barkley and Margaret Elizabeth Shaw were married in Battle Ground, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, 24 June 1852; and lived in Ogle County, Illinois and Lawrence County, Missouri before moving to Montague County shortly before his death. A family story said he was buried on the family farm near Spanish Fort, but he was probably buried in the Old Spanish Fort Cemetery with his wife Margaret and other family members.
