H. A. Lawhead, Real Estate Broker, Dies

Hugh A Lawhead, long prominent in Lawrence Township and Clearfield County politics and in civic affairs, died yesterday at 3:45 p.m. in the Clearfield Hospital after a short illness. He was 57.

Mr. Lawhead had served as a school director, Republican precinct chairman in Hyde and as the first chairman of the Lawrence Township and the Clearfield Borough - Lawrence Township Planning Commissions. A real estate broker, he also had worked many years with the former state highways department, including 12 years as assistant county superintendent and four years as county superintendent of highways.

A member of the Lawrence Township School Board for 18 years, he served as its secretary for 10 years and as president for six years. He was elected to the Clearfield County School Board when it was organized in 1987 and in 1949 was elected a director of the Pennsylvania State School Directors Association.

He became chairman of the Lawrence Township Planning Commission when it was organized in 1964 and of the Clearfield - Lawrence Joint Commission on its organization in January 1965.

He was a member of the Centre Grove Methodist Church, Clearfield, F. and A. M. Lodge No. 314, the Williamsport Consistory, Clearfield Lodge 540 of the B.P.O. Elks and the Clearfield - Curwensville Country Club. He was a past Deputy grand master of the I.O.O.F. and a former member of the Clearfield Kiwanis Club.

Born June 22, 1904, in Hyde, he was a son of Nathan O. and Margaret Flemming Lawhead, both now deceased. He is survived by his wife, the former Avanella P. Mayhew and these children:

Nathanial Paul, Dudley, Mrs. David (Eva) Ferguson and Mrs. James (Phyllis) Walker, Clearfield; Mrs. Carol (Norma Jean) Herald, West Chester; and Arthur, Meadville. He also leaves 16 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two brothers, Kenneth and Thomas of Hyde. He was preceded in death by one son, Hugh A. Jr., in 1950, and by two brothers, Walter and Robert.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Nicholson Funeral Home with the Rev. G. Edward Loreman officiating. Interment will be in Crown Crest Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
