Born to Matthias Hersman (1788-1839) & Lucy Kiser Hersman (1806-1838).
Susan married 1) Elijah Mars Yager (1816-1862) on Feb. 22, 1844, in Shelby County, Kentucky. The family moved to Collin County, TX, between 1856 and 1859 with Susan leaving her mother and all her siblings behind in Kentucky. Elijah died in the midst of the Civil War and is buried in an unmarked grave at Frankford Cemetery in Addison, Texas. The family tried to locate the the grave after the Civil War but was unsuccessful.

Susan married 2) Dr. Bereman S. Shelburne (1817-1895) on Jan. 6, 1863, in Collin County, TX. He practiced medicine in Collin County, TX, from 1857 to 1890.
Two children:
• Susan Frances "Fannie" Shelburne Smith (1865-1948)
• Lucy Shelburne Carwile (1869-1961)
