Catherine Grigg Hayes was born 26 July 1824 in Dallas County, Alabama, the daughter of Patrick W. Hayes of Virginia, and Martha Brown, of Georgia. On 12 November of 1845, Kate married Alexander Barron Clitherall, son of Dr. George Campbell Clitherall and Carolina Elisabeth Burgwyn in Noxubee County, Mississippi. They had nine known children together, but the first five died early on in life. On the 17 October 1906, Kate Clitherall died in Montgomery, Alabama. She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery on 27 October 1906.
