Adam and Mary took 19 days to emigrate from Pike County Ohio to Jacksonville, Illinois in a "prairie schooner" accompanied by two other families. The family was obliged to live economically until they obtained their start in the world, then bought 1/4 section of land in Meredosia. Adam was a farmer and master cabinetmaker. He also taught voice and violin. He built his family a house, which came down in the 1960's. He had the first threshing machine in the county.

Adam was one of the leading citizens of the township and had extended acquaintances. He was a Democrat with Greenback proclivities, but being of modest disposition never sought office. A kind and loving husband and father, he enjoyed the reputation of being an honest man. Adam was a member of Union Baptist Church and always active in church work. He was a member of the Masons.
