George was the youngest of six children born to Mary Ann Rogers and Dr. Nathaniel Sanford Rogers of Chenango County, New York. When George was two years old, Dr. Rogers died from complications of cholera and overwork.

Try as she could, Mrs. Rogers could not maintain the family unit and was forced to "bind out" the three youngest children. George was sent to live with a family who abused him. After one particularly brutal beating, George decided it would never happen again and he ran away when he was 16.

He found and reunited with three of his brothers and together, they traveled to California, to Oklahoma and finally Florida where he met Dolly Luella Weeks, a native of St. Augustine, FL.

Dolly and George married December 24, 1895 and had seven children together: Basil, Fred, Winnie, Verall, William, Grace, and Eldon. The family settled in Volusia County, Florida and were pioneers of Daytona Beach and Holly Hill in Volusia County. George was a carpenter and built many of the buildings and homes in the area.

He passed away at the age of 79 in the home he built in Holly Hill.
