Prominent Vinton County Dairy Farmer Died in Farm Accident on Memorial Day Weekend
Fred Irelan, 69, died in an accident on his farm, southwest of McArthur at noon, Thursday, Memorial Day, May 30.
Ireland had recently retired and turned the farm operation over to his son, Francis, who survives as does another son, Ralph, in the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Two grandchildren survive as do two sisters, Mrs. Addie Downard and Mrs. Bertha Bartoe, both of McArthur.
His first wife and two small children were tragically killed in a railroad crossing accident just east of McArthur in 1916. His second wife, the former Mae Gregory, preceded him in death.
He was a member of Delta Lodge, F&AM, and of the Vinton Chapel EUB Church.
He was born Feb. 29, 1888, in Vinton County, the son of Ishmel and Margaret England Irelan. Funeral services for Fred Irelan will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., at the Wrightsel Funeral Chapel in McArthur with Rev. C. P. Hinton officiating. Burial was in Elk Cemetery in charge of the Wrightsel Company.
