Edward William Benson, Jr. was one of two sons of Edward and Maida (Baker) Benson. His younger brother, Dr. Herbert Benson, was a veterinarian. Edward graduated from Michigan State College with a BS in Civil Engineering. He married Mary Jewett Mixter, daughter of Louis Cain and Mattie Belle (Jewett) Mixter of Lansing, Michigan.

Edward served in Burma during World War II as an engineering officer building the Lido Road which connected to the Burma Road. He was a Major at the time of his discharge from the Army.
