INDIAN LAKE -- Doris E. Benton, 85, went peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday evening, April 30, 2013, at Glens Falls Hospital.

Born Dec. 3, 1927, in Indian Lake, she was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Bennett) Benton.

Doris was the valedictorian of Class of 1944 at Indian Lake Central School. She received a bachelor's degree from Plattsburgh State Teachers College, now known as SUNY Plattsburgh. Later in life, she returned to school to become a paralegal.

Doris was very interested in elementary education and taught school in Loudonville, Clayton, Glens Falls, Hawaii and finally in Indian Lake, where she taught until her retirement. While teaching, she was active with high school students as a coach for softball, basketball and cheerleading. She received a plaque from Indian Lake Central School recognizing her 25 years as an educator.

Doris and her best friend, Barbara Day, were actively involved in First Baptist Church of Indian Lake and in many community activities in Indian Lake. She taught Sunday school to both children and adults for 49 years. She was a member of Indian Lake Ambulance Corps and Parker Benton American Legion Post No. 1392 Women's Auxiliary.

She was predeceased by her parents; four brothers, Edward at the age of 4 1/2, Donald at the age of 2 1/2, Frank and John; and one sister, Leona Ameden.

Burial will be in Cedar River Cemetery, Indian Lake.
