Sara "Gladys" Varner, 80, of Jack's Mountain Road, Mapleton Depot, PA died at 7:30 PM, Friday, May 14, 2010 at J. C. Blair Hospital, Huntingdon, PA.

Born October 24, 1929 in Union Township, Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late David and Keturah (Whitsel) Long. She was married to John Thomas Varner on November 28, 1947. They were married 62 years. Mr. Varner survives at their home.

Two daughters survive, Villa Bowles, RD, Mapleton Depot and Glenda Prokopick and husband Richard of Hershey, PA.

There are five granddaughters; Angela Parsons and husband, Douglas, Blairs Mills, PA, Deneen Hall and husband, Richard, RD, Mapleton Depot, Samantha Sunderland and husband, Brian, Three Springs, PA, Sarah Crawford and husband Douglas, Elizabethtown, PA and Christine Prokopick, Philadelphia, PA. There are 11 great-grandchildren, 2 step great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

A sister, Margaret Corbin, survives of Mount Union, PA. Two brothers, Robert Long and Willis Long and three sisters, Goldie Lamberson, Mary Madden and Blanche Gartland and a son-in-law, William Bowles are deceased.

Mrs. Varner attended Beech Run Church of the Brethren, Mapleton Depot, PA.

A 1947 graduate of Mount Union High School, Mrs. Varner worked at Greif Manufacturing, Mount Union and later was a housemother at Milton Hershey School, Hershey, PA.

After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren along with doing handwork-quilting and crocheting.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the Beech Run Church of the Brethren, 14918 Hares Valley Road, Mapleton Depot, PA with Pastor Connie Maclay officiating. Interment will be made in Bowman's Chapel Cemetery, RD, Mapleton Depot. Friends may call at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, 565 Ridgley Street, Orbisonia, PA from 7-9:00 PM on Tuesday and at the church one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Beech Run Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund, 14918 Hares Valley Road, Mapleton Depot, PA 17052 or to Home Nursing Hospice Program, 9492 William Penn Highway, Suite 1, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
