Written by a great-granddaughter of Perry Holleyman.

It can be assumed that Eli Chaffin was born in Christian County, Kentucky. Loretta Laseter McGehee (Pioneer Families of Anderson County) gives 1803 as the year of Eli's birth. Clinton County marriage records show that he married Lavenia Row (1808 - 1892) on November 16, 1828. Lavenia was the daughter of John Row, a farmer and justice of the peace in Clinton County. Probate papers on John Row's estate indicate that Lavenias was one of the heirs "at law." John and his wife, Elizabeth, came to Clinton County around 185 from Tennessee according to The History of Marion and Clinton Counties, Illinois. John died in Clinton County in 1845 and Elizabeth followed him in death the next year. Nothing is know about their ancestors.

Eli Chaffin died in 1845, a few years after he, Lavenia, and their family moved to Texas. Their daughter, Mary Jane Chaffin, married Perry Holleyman when she was around sixteen years of age. Lavenia remarried, and her second husband was James W. Parker who was uncle to Cynthia Ann Parker. Cynthia Ann was captured by the Comanches during her childhood, and her life story is well known in the Southwest. Lavenia died May 17, 1892 and is buried in the haffin Family Cemetery near Grapeland, Texas. The cemetery is located in a grove of trees in the middle of an open field. It is believed that Eli is also buried there, but there is no tombstone to mark his grave.
