John C. Howell died at the home his daughter, Mrs Sam McDowell, Fri Mar 29, 1929 8:30 am at the advanced age of 84 yrs, 10 mos and 24 days. Funeral Services were held
at the Baptist Church in Elvins at 2:00 pm, conducted by the Rev R F Liddell. Interment was made in the Christian Cemetery at Fredericktown. Mr Howell was born in Virginia
on 5 May 1844. He was a member of the G.A.R., having served with the Union Army as a member of the 8th Tenn. Cav., under Gen. Grant. His wife preceeded him in death nine years ago, but he leaves five sons: Ed, of Fredericktown, George D of Alton, W.P. and P.A. of St. Louis, and D.A. of Flat River, two daughters, Mrs Lucy Woodmansee of Fredericktown, and Mrs Carrie McDowell of Elvins to mourn his death. He joined the Old Free Will Baptist Church at Mine la Motte in early manhood and has faithfully lived his religion throughout his life. Although bedfast because of paralysis for over a year,
he was always cheerful and patient. Besides his children he leaves: 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. The News extends sympathy to all who are bereaved because of
his death.
