Willis Duane Wardwell, 65, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at his residence near Teague. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Interment will follow the services at Salem Cemetery near Freestone with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Willis was born in Teague, Texas, to the late Delbert and Ludie May Wardwell. His family moved to Hillsboro where he spent most of his childhood, and then the family moved to Stamford, Texas, while he was in school and he graduated from Stamford High School with the Class of 1964. Willis enjoyed sports and was a member of a boxing club in Hillsboro and played football and baseball in high school at Stamford. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 and served in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1969, but re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served until retiring in 1991. He married Dorothy Price on March 10, 1984. After retiring from the Air Force, Willis purchased a motor home and traveled the country with his wife. They returned to Teague in 1996 where they remained. Willis was a great cook and loved cooking BBQ and watching people eat his food. He enjoyed helping people and was good at fixing things. Willis was a lifelong member of D.A.V. and a Baptist by faith.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Sue Stearns.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lee Price Wardwell, of Teague; sons, Toby Wardwell and wife, Casie, of Wichita Falls, and Bryan Wardwell and wife, Misty, of Oklahoma City, OK; step-sons, Len Baty, of Memphis, TN, and Scott Bat,y of Houston; grandchildren, Patricia Alexis Wardwell, Brayden Shane Wardwell, Alissa Cheree Wardwell, and Bailey Wardwell; step-grandchildren, Brenna, Taylor, and Chelsea; brothers, Lawrence Wardwell and wife, Sherry, of Denver, Colorado, Kenneth Scott Wardwell and wife, Lisa, of Sherman, and Clarence Wardwell and wife, Lynda, of Abilene; sisters, Laura Cole and husband, Corkey, of Waco, and Charlotte Myher and husband, Bobby, of Robinson; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
