According to his death certificate, he was the son of Albert T. Schmidt (b. Missouri) and Minerva Smith (b. Lexington, Texas), and was married at the time of his death. He died at the Veterans Administration (VA) hospital in Dallas, Texas (where he had been for the three years prior to his death from mouth cancer), even though the certificate reports he was a resident of Austin, Texas. The informant on his death certificate was the Clinical Clerk of the VA in Dallas, Texas.
