Her parents were immigrants from the Syrian Arab Republic: her father, Anton John Coury, came in 1894 at age 14, and her mother, Raffna Shaya, in 1905 at age 18.

Emma had two older siblings: Anna Marie (Coury) Sandoval and Fred Coury. Anna and her husband Alfonso Sandoval are buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery; Fred and his wife Elva are buried at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque.
