Mrs. J. H. Jones Buried In Storm

Committal Service Read at House as Snow Keeps Relatives From Cemetery

Born in a December snowstorm in 1868, her first child born in a snowstorm of the early '90s, Mrs. Maggie Bourne Jones, of Waquoit, who died last Wednesday evening, was buried during the heavy snowstorm of Sunday afternoon. She had been in poor health for more than a year. Service was read by the Rev. Hugh Duglay, with a commital service by W.W. Wood Auxiliary, American Legion, at Mrs. Jones's home. The storm prevented any service at Bayview cemetery, where she was buried, only the four pallbearers, her two sons and two brothers, accompanying the hearse through the snow to the grave.

Mrs. Jones was the daughter of Charles L. and Annie T. Bourne, of Waquoit, where she was born and where she lived all her life. She was married in the Falmouth Congregational church, Feb. 15, 1891, to Jonathon H. Jones, of Waquoit, by the Rev. Charles H. Washburn. An active member of the Waquoit Congregational church, she was for 15 years secretary and clerk of the church, and for 12 years secretary of the Sewing Circle. She was president of the Waquoit W.C.T.U. for nine years, and since its inception the local chairman of the Red Cross. She was also an active member of the W. W. Wood Post, Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by three sons, Harold R. Jones and Edward R. Jones, of Waquoit, and Laurence B. Jones of Melrose; two daughters, Mrs. Sara Robbins and Mrs. Helene Crocker, of Centerville; two brothers, W. F. Bourne, West Falmouth, and Orrin C. Bourne, Melrose; and six grandchildren.

Among the many friends from out of town who came to Waquoit Saturday and Sunday to attend the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. P.E. Bourne, Amherst; Mr. and Mrs. John Rose, and B.D. Bourne, Auburndale; Mr. and Mrs. Laurence B. Jones, and daughter Laurine and Mr. and Mrs. Orrin C. Bourne, Melrose; Miss Jessie Bourne, Clarence Bourne, Watertown; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Crosby and Mr. and Mrs. Phillips Dennett, Norwood; Mrs. Stanley Rowley and two daughters, Nantucket Elmer Phinney, Hyannis; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Allen, and Albert Jones, Osterville; Mr. and Mrs. William Perry, New Bedford; Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf Melcher, Newton Highlands; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones, Centerville, Mrs. Annie Landers, Osterville; and other friends and relatives from Osterville, Centerville, and environs of Falmouth.
