Around 1926 her husband Nathan Hammond deserted the family and assumed the identity of Albert Lewis. Albert Lewis worked for the railroad and lived in the Cedar Rapids/Marion area.
In his 1974 obit, Albert Lewis listed Alvin Hammond of Dubuque as one of his sons but did not list his daughter Mildred Kruse.

Dorothy Hammond funeral services
ELKADER (Special) - Mrs. Dorothy Hammond, 78, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Center at West Union.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Witt Funeral Home, Elkader, with burial in Asbury cemetery at rural Elkader.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. William Kruse of Elkader and one son, Alvin, of Dubuque. Also, one sister, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
