William (Bill) Merritt Murphy beloved husband, father and grandfather was 'called home' on the morning of June 25, 1996.
He loved every one and was known for his joviality, his cheery laugh and his infectious smile. To his family Bill was very loving and kind. He epitomized the Good Samaritan and was ever ready to help anyone. Bill is survived by his wife Mabel of Barnwell, his four children, two of whom have since passed away, Noreen (Glen) Pierson of Lethbridge, Geraldine (private) Manville of Calgary, and his step children: 41 grand-children, 30 great grandchildren, and sisters Myrtle (Dave) Ferguson, Martha (George) Smith, Mary (Tom) Kerrison. He was predeceased by his Brother George Murphy and his sisters, Leona Seely, Minnie (Jack) Burns, and Viola (Harold) Haynes
Bill was born June 13, 1907 in Kilgore, Nebraska. At the age of four he travelled with his family to Purple Springs where they homesteaded. He attended school in Antonio and Barnwell. He loved sports, especially racing and baseball. In 1934 he married Lenora Hammer and they were blessed with four children. His entire life was centred around his family. Nora passed away in 1966 and he later married Lucille Donaldson who predeceased him in 1974 . He married Mabel Howells in 1975 and they have resided on the farm south of Barnwell until his passing. Bill was a hard worker. He was employed as a mechanic for 30 years at the Taber Sugar Factory and over 20 years with Broder's pea viners. During this time he also farmed in Barnwell, retiring when he was 83 years young.
