English Royalty. He was a son of King Edward I of England and his first wife, Eleanor of Castile. Following the death of his brother, Henry, on October 14, 1274, he became the heir apparent to the English throne and as such was styled Earl of Chester, in the period before Edward I would designate the title Prince of Wales for the heir to the throne in 1301. He was born in Bayonne, in Gascony, and named for his maternal uncle, King Alfonso X of Castile, who served as his godfather and travelled to Gascony in order to perform the duty in person. The bestowal of the given name Alfonso was unusual as the name was exceedingly rare in England. He was betrothed to Margaret, daughter of Floris V, Count of Holland, but their marriage would never transpire as he died at Windsor Castle on August 19, 1274. He was interred within Edward the Confessor's Chapel in Westminster Abbey and his heart was buried at Blackfriars Priory. His death left his younger brother, Edward, as heir to the English throne.
