Orion B. Reed, 99, formerly of Marion, died at 2 a.m. Friday in Harbour Manor Care Center, Noblesville.
He was born in Marion, the oldest son of the late Edwin J. Reed and Frances M. (Burrows) Reed. He was preceded in death by his wives, Mildred Irene Martin and Justine Pulley.
He was the last member of his 1924 Marion High School class. After high school graduation, he obtained a position with Ford Motor Co. in Detroit. He returned to Marion in 1931 and managed Standard Oil service stations, first at Sixth and Adams streets, then at Sixth and Washington streets and lastly at First and Washington streets, until retiring in 1969. He then went to work at Norton's Sportsman Supply Co. He also began a small business that included repairing fishing poles and fishing reels.
He was a member of Grant County Geological Society and made many pieces of jewelry from cutting and polishing various kinds of gems. He also was involved in making many stained-glass ornaments. He was a member of Gant County Civil Air Patrol, rising to be unit commander. He was appointed to Marion Airport Commission to establish a permanent location. He was a longtime member and elder of First Christian Church.
Survivors include son, Merwyn O. (Dawna) Reed, Noblesville; two grandchildren, Kent (Jill) Reed, Noblesville, and Lt. Col. Kary (Ret. Maj. Warren) Ostuka, Newport News, Va.; great-granddaughters, Brandie (Shawn) Strachan, Biggs, Calif., and Britni Reed, Mojave, Calif.; and great-great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Strachan, Biggs, Calif.
He also was preceded in death by siblings, Kenneth and Carl Reed, Velma Miller and Marjorie Bunker.
Services are at 11 a.m. Monday in Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, with the Rev. Rodger Moore officiating. Burial is in Estates of Serenity cemetery.
