John E. Bender Sr., 96, of Newville died Sunday, Mar. 24, 2013 in his home.
He was born Nov. 28, 1916 in Carlisle, the son of Carl E. and Jennie May Bigler Bender.
Mr. Bender was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite P. Hocker Bender, who died Aug. 13, 2008.
He had served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII.
He had retired from the Carlisle Barracks, and had owned Benders Shoe Repair in Newville.
He belonged to Zion Lutheran Church Newville, and was a life member of Friendship Hose Co. #1 where he was a former Fire Chief.
Mr. Bender is survived by one son John "Butch" Bender Jr., and his wife Carole; two daughters, Sue Morrow and husband Todger, and Carolyn Lloyd and husband Ken, all of Newville; four grandchildren, Matthew Lloyd, Kathy Lloyd, Stephen Bender, and Michael Bender; three great grandchildren; and one sister Romaine Dibucci of Pittsburgh.
He is preceded in death by two brothers Stewart, and Marlin Bender; and two sisters Geraldine Schneider, and Janet Minnich.
A viewing will be held Saturday, Mar. 30, from 10 to 11 AM at the Egger Funeral Home Inc., 15 W. Big Spring Ave. Newville. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jean Kuebler officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Newville Cemetery.
