SISTERS OF CHARITY OF SETON HILL
OFFICE OF ARCHIVES
Seton Hill, Greensburg, PA 15601
March 31, 1978

Dear Archivist,

Long before the publication of ROOTS, my sister and I collaborated on collecting whatever material we could from Mother's notes and other material to write family histories of our father's family (Breig) and our mother's (McKenzie). A year ago my sister died, and I have been trying to complete the histories.
I found a death card for Father Eli McKenzie (our uncle) who was born May 25, 1848 and died Sept. 24, 1888. In an autobiography of Archbishop James Roosevelt Bayley, 8th Archbishop of Baltimore, I read that the Archbishop died October 3, 1877. The death card for Father McKenzie states he was ordained in Baltimore December 22, 1877. Can you give me any further information on Father Eli McKenzie? I seem to remember that my Mother said Father was the first pastor to St. Agnes' Church (in what I think is now Catonsville). I remember that an aunt who lived in Baltimore took me to this church when I
was a teenager and there was a plaque about Father McKenzie in the vestibule. Unfortunately I didn't copy the data on the plaque. When one is young, one isn't much interested in ancestors. But I feel we have every reason to be proud to belong to the McKenzie family. I enclose a newspaper zerox copy of what I feel is a remarkable conversion. Since Archbishop Bayley died before Father Mac, as Mother always called him, was ordained, do you have a record of who did ordain him?

I shall be very much appreciative of any information you can give me.

Sincerely,

Sister Regina Clare Breig

Dear Sister Regina,

I can't add very much to what you already know about Father McKenzie. The "Record of Ordination" gives 1877 for Elias McKenzie and then this: "Very good talent, serious mind, studious habits, very conscientious, a good and kind temper: self relying, forward and lacking tact." He was stationed at St. John's, Valley St. after ordination until he was made pastor of St. Agnes in Catonsville. However, St. Agnes was founded in 1853 and Father Edward Caton was the first pastor. Father Caton was buried in front of the church and a small monument was erected. I helped out there on Sundays 1945-1954 (when the new church was erected." I remember no plaque. I would presume Archbishop Gibbons ordained him.

Success!

Sincerely,

John J. Tierney
