According to news articles, Bessie was engaged to Harry Sayer, son of a well known millionaire manufacturer of Newark, New Jersey. She suffered from ptomaine poisoning after eating salad and chili con carne in a Glendale restaurant. She suffered for twenty days, and died on Christmas Eve 1909. It was alleged that she had been poisoned by a rival for the affections of Harry Sayer, that he had warned her about the woman, she had been seen at the restaurant with a woman, and had talked about it in her delerium. Her mother, Jennie Priest (later Reid), wanted it investigated as a homicide, however, the sheriff discredited the theory.
