Robert Edward Batten, 86, of East Moline and Sun City, Ariz., passed away Jan. 18, 2008, in Peoria, Ariz., after a long battle with diabetes, Parkinson's disease and cancer.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary, with Silvis Masonic Lodge 898 rites at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Robert Batten's favorite charities, including the Silvis Masonic Building fund or the American Cancer Society.

Robert was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Moline, the only child of Milo and Margaret Peterson Batten. He married Margaret Elizabeth Anderson in 1942; she preceded him in death in 1985. He later married Dorothy L. Kellums from East Moline and was married to her for 21 years.

Robert graduated from United Township High School, East Moline, where he played in the school band.
Robert was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Aleutian Islands Campaign and in the Pacific Theater. He was a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason in Moline, and a life member of both Drier Whitney VFW Post 1933, Silvis, and American Legion Post 246, Moline. He belonged to the Moline High 12 Masonic group and Thor Vikings Lodge, Moline. He belonged to the Moline Moose and played in the Moose Band. He was a longtime member of Silvis United Methodist Church.
His love of camping took him to several of the western and eastern United States, and even into Canada and Mexico. He also loved the ocean, visiting Hawaii, Alaska and the Pacific Islands. He enjoyed playing cards with the Silvis retirees and dominos with friends and family. He retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1979 as an electrician. He enjoyed using his electrical skills to help friends and neighbors with their electrical problems.

Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his four sons (and their wives), Larry Batten (Sandra), Wellington, Fla., Thomas Batten (Peggy), Princeton, Wis., Kenneth Batten (Roxanne), Moline, and Paul Batten, Silvis. He also is survived by grandchildren, Michael Batten (Linda), Indianapolis, Ind., Susan Curry (Clayton), East Moline, James Batten, Las Vegas, Nev., Jeffrey Batten (Roseanne Hobosayan), Las Vegas, Rudy Larson (Stephanie) Cambridge, Reggie Larson (Kelly) Geneseo, Rusty Larson, Fort Hood, Texas, Tonia Spears-Reese (Greg Reese), Dalton, Wis., Jerry Spears (Lisa), Oxford, Wis. He also is survived by great-grandchildren, Alexander and Madelyn Curry, both of East Moline, Tyler Larson, Highland, Ill., Zoey and Kaden Larson, both of Cambridge, Alexendra Batten, Ysma, Alaska, Ashley Durbin, East Moline, Mikayla Spears, Oxford, Cole Westeen, Dalton, and Therin and Alex Crauthers, Soldotma, Alaska; and great-great-grandson, Kayden. He also is survived by niece, Carol Johnson, Moline; and cousin, Gladys Baker, Kewanee.

He was preceeded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; his grandson, Jeff Spears; and great-grandson, Kasey Larson.
