Elva May Race was the second of the five surviving children born to Edgar and Sarah (DeWitt) Race. She attended the Montgomery School in Burnside, Lapeer County. She married Hugh Alexander Johnson on May 24, 1884. They had seven children together, Elizabeth, Flora, Rozella, William, Hamilton, Alice, and Gertrude. After her husband's early death in 1918, Elva never remarried and went on to live to the age of 95, passing away in 1961.
