Mr. J. Neil Coffin, age 82 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, April 22, 2013, at the Harry S Truman Veterans Hospital, Columbia, Mo. Neil was born December 29, 1930, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of the Reverend Jesse S. and Merle Barrett Coffin. He was married on March 23, 1956, in Lincoln, Neb., to Sandra Pennington.
Neil graduated from Lincoln High School, Lincoln, Neb. He served in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Boxer after World War II and on the U.S.S. Douglas Munro during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a degree in Business Administration.
After graduation, he was employed with the Chambers of Commerce in Lincoln, Neb. and Bedford, Ind. In 1967, Neil joined the Missouri Chamber of Commerce. He edited the Missouri Business Magazine and was instrumental in the Leadership Missouri Program. He retired as an Executive Vice-President on December 31, 1995.
Neil was a member of the First Christian Church, was Secretary-Treasurer of Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri, and a past member of the Jefferson City Country Club.
Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Sandra Coffin; three children, Cynthia Hoeller and her husband Henry of Westphalia, Mo., Gregg Coffin and his wife Claudia of Columbia, Mo., and Melissa Backues and her husband Stacey of Jefferson City, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Amanda Kesel and her husband Josh, David Hoeller and his wife Beth, Elizabeth Hoeller, Sarah Hoeller, Nicole Coffin, Ryan Coffin, Haylee Backues, and Kelsie Backues; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Barrett Coffin, Willard Coffin, Orman Coffin, and Robert Coffin.
Visitation will be at the First Christian Church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013, at the First Christian Church with the Reverend Donald Carter officiating. Military honors will immediately follow the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church.
