The son of John & Jane (McKain) Kugle, in 1860 he was a currier living with and/or working for the Benjamin Sherbone family in Maytown, East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio, August 28, 1861, and mustered into federal service there at Camp Vance September 19 as a private with Co. A, 21st Ohio Infantry. Wounded in the left arm at the battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863, he was hospitalized and later transferred to Co. H, 11th Veteran Reserve Corps that was reorganized to 3rd Co., 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps. He honorably discharged at term's end September 19, 1864.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1865, as a private with Co. B, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.
Note that the accompanying obituary actually relates his military service correctly, something that is often not the case in obituaries for Civil War veterans.

He married Martha J. Lumbston or Lunsden ca. 1871 in Evansville, Indiana, and fathered Elizabeth Aiken (b. 12/25/72 - married a Bracht but her death certificate lists her as Kugle), James L. (b. 08/14/85), Harrison M. (b. 07/04/88), and John R. (b. 07/23/92). Cause of his death is listed as "peritonitis" with a "vesicle abscess" a contributing factor.
