Thornton Burial Held Wednesday

Funeral services for Eugene V. Thornton were held Wednesday afternoon at the Cage Funeral Home chapel with Rev. C. M. Kelley, Jr., officiating. Burial was held in the Rockport Cemetery.

Thornton, who had been a resident of Kingsville for the past year, died in a Kingsville hospital shortly after midnight Monday, approximately one hour after suffering a gunshot wound through the upper chest and lower abdomen. Marvin Hinton, Kingsville cafe owner, was at liberty under $1,000 bond Tuesday morning after being charged with the murder of Thornton.

Eugene Thornton is survived by his wife and one daughter, Sara, of Kingsville; his father, C. K. Thornton of Rockport; three brothers, J. M. Thornton of Aransas Pass and L. V. and Leon Thornton, both of Rockport; five sisters, Mrs. H. J. Gurley, Mrs. N. Parr, Mrs. W. H. Tucker and Mrs. Cecil Ince, all of Rockport, and Mrs. B. D. White of Dallas.

The rest of the story: Eugene's wife was a waitress in Marvin Hinton's cafe. Eugene and Marvin never liked each other much. During one incident at the cafe, Marvin pulled his gun and told Eugene to leave. Eugene grabbed the barrel of the gun, it went off in the struggle. Marvin was acquitted on grounds of self defense.
