Joseph Appelman was born in Birkenfeld, Bavaria, Germany. He married Margaret Frantz Wolpert in Germany. The family came to the US in 1848 first settling in Baltimore, MD. They later moved to an area known as St. Patrick's in Louden County OH sometime around the year 1850. There they cut logs and built their home with their own hands. In 1852, in the Court of Common Pleas at Tiffton, OH, Joseph renounced his allegiance to the King of Bavaria and became a citizen of the US. During their time in Ohio, Joseph and his wife had 4 more children. After Margaret passed away, the family lived for a time on a farm west of Delphos, Ohio. They later moved to Decatur, In. where Joseph purchased a farm. He and his sons operated the farm for many years and it stayed in the family for several generations. Joseph died at the home of his son Andrew in 1900 and is buried in St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery outside Decatur, IN.
