recounting of Alma Barney

I am Ray Bert Hansen, son of John Thomas Hansen. His Father, my grandfather, is Erastus Andersen Hansen.
My Grandfather and Father farmed in the town of Palmyra, Utah. The Spanish Fork River separates the two towns of Palmyra and Lake Shore. The Barney family lived next to but across the river in Lake Shore. Bert (Alma) Barney came to grandpa Hansen as a young boy and worked for him on the farm, eventually staying at their home permenently. It was grandpa that drove Bert to San diego to board the ship that transported the troops to France and picked him up when he returned. Bert continued to live with my Grandparents until they died. Dad purchased the home and we moved from the home mom and Dad built. Bert stayed with us as part of the family until his death. He purchased some property next to the land that Dad had bought and some cattle with grazing permits on forest land. Dad and Bert Farmed together their entire life with never a dispute over land money or cattle. Bert never married. He did favor one of Dads sisters but it never took.

Physically Bert was small 5' 4" but was a strong man, well muscled and stout. pleasant to look at and loved to farm, fish and deer hunt. He wore bib overalls and a straw hat. His siblings lived close by and he visited them from time to time but not often.

I must share this story.
The farm was nearly self sufficient with Cattle, hog, Chickens, milk cows and horses (Bert was an excellent handler/driver. The family made their own butter with a hand churn.
Bert got the idea that he could hook a motor to the churn; he did. It was a little to much churn and the lid came flying off, and milk, cream and part butter came flying out, covering him. Being a resourceful man and not wanting to be wasteful he crawled into the pig pen and let them lick him clean. TRUE STORY.

Alma left his home at an early age to live with Erastus J & Mary P Barney and family per 1900 US federal census, Benjamin Ut, age 13, listed as a "son". The 1910 census, age 22 shows him living with Erastus A & Anna Lucilla Beck Hansen family, as a boarder.

Alma joined the army and fought in WWI.

After WWI he went home to Benjamin to live with John Thomas & Georgia Griggs Hansen and their sons, on the Hansen farm. The US census 1930 shows him as an employee. He lived with the Hansens until his death, abt 84 years of age
