Lucile Elizabeth Adams, 103, formerly of Lanark, moved to Lexington, KY in 1985 to be near her daughter and son-in-law for her golden years until her death on Monday, April 2, 2012.
Lucile was born on April 4, 1908, in Cherry Grove Township, Carroll County, Ill. to Elmer and Rose (Schneider) Stoner. She spent her early years on the farm in rural Milledgeville. At the age of 12, when her parents bought a farm, she moved with them to rural Lanark.
Lucile is a 1926 graduate of Lanark High School, along with 25 classmates. That same year she entered Madden School of Beauty Culture in Rockford. She graduated the following year as a licensed cosmetologist. This work she practiced in her home for many years.
On August 11, 1927, she married Donald R. Adams in Rockford. They made their home in Lanark. To this marriage was born a son, Richard Donald, on Feb. 1, 1931 and a daughter, Donalee Joyce, on Dec. 5, 1938.
Lucile loved her home and garden and has found much enjoyment there over the years. It was a special place for her to share in spending time with her husband Donald and their family and many friends. A favorite hobby was growing and exhibiting her prized flowers, especially roses. She loved going to the Carroll County Fair, where she exhibited her prize winning specimen roses and table settings with plants and flowers of different varieties.
Mrs. Adams was a past member of the Lanark Federated Women's Club, working as the conservation division chairwoman, working in projects with grade school children and junior high youth for the betterment of our environment. Through these projects, a tree was planted on Earth Day. Lucile was concerned with conservation causes throughout Carroll County. She and Donald worked with the Sportsmen Club. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau.
Lucile was a long time member of the Church of the Brethren, accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the age of 10 in the Milledgeville Church of the Brethren, then placing her membership in the Lanark congregation when her family moved to that rural community. She read the Bible through twice before her eyes failed her. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship and the Stitching Sisters, that work for the needy.
She has served Christ through the work of the church in many ways. One of those was serving on the flower committee for about 25 years. One of her great joys was to make floral arrangements of her flowers to share with family and friends at church.
Since moving to Lexington, Lucile has been a member of First Christian Church, and then Tates Creek Christian Church, and has many friends in both congregations.
It was a great shock for her in 1981, when she lost her son, Richard, at the age of 50 years. The next year was also a difficult one, for in 1982 her husband Donald died at the age of 82. Another tragedy was the passing of her daughter, Donalee Joyce Nesemeier, on Jan. 18, 2010.
Lucile appreciated the support she received from her family. Her daughter, Donalee Joyce Nesemeier and son-in-law, Ned Nesemeier have done so much to fulfill Lucile's needs during her golden years. She loved her grandchildren very much and appreciated the love and affection they showed to her.
Survivors include her son-in-law, Ned Nesemeier of Lexington, KY; her daughter-in-law, Mary Barklow of Boulder Junction, WI; her grandchildren, Bradley (Kathy Burton) Nesemeier of Lexington, KY, Mark (Janet Harvey) Nesemeier of Crested Butte, CO, Tammy (Mike) Crawford of Boulder Junction, WI, and July Ann (Tom) Miller of Cape Girardeau, MO, who had given special attention to her. Lucile is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren, whom she loved, Justin and Christopher Miller, Mrs. Jodie Miller-Finney (Matt), Wendy and Ryan Nesemeier, Mark Wright, and William Scott Feidt; and many loving cousins and relatives. Lucile took great pride in her family, home and church.
Graveside Services will be on Wed. April 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lanark Cemetery with Pastor Dan Rusmisel officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark.
