George worked on his father's farm until around 21 years of age. At that time he went into business with a partner in Lane, Ogle County, IL. He married Sophia James, daughter of Jonathan James and Sophia George Bunker. They lived about seven years in Lane and then went to Rockford where he bought a soap manufacturing company and expanded it into a sum of wealth. He manufactured a laundry soap called "Shoudy's Wonderful Soap" and another toilet soap called "Telephone Soap" in honor of the invention of the telephone.
