Crash Kills Canastotan Near Homer

HOMER – An 84-year-old Canastota man died en route to Cortland County Hospital and a Homer Policewoman school guard is hospitalized as a result of injuries suffered in a head-on crash at 1:30 P.M. yesterday on Route 281, a mile north of Homer.

Rufus A. Franklin, of Canastota R.D. 2 was driver of one car and was traveling south while Mrs. Winona Fitzgerald, 3 Grove st., school crossing guard, was driving her car north, when the two collided head-on.

ACCORDING TO Dr. George Nevin, coroner, Mr. Franklin suffered a crushed chest, fractures of the jaw, left knee and left wrist. He died as he was being removed from the scene of the accident to the hospital.

A native of Eaton, Pa., Mr. Franklin formerly resided in East Syracuse. He moved to Canastota 16 years ago.

He retired in 1945 as a locomotive engineer in the DeWitt yards of the New York Central Railroad, after 37 years of service with the railroad. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chittenango, and of General Winslow Division 288, B. of L. E., East Syracuse.

SURVIVING ARE three daughters, Mrs. Gordon Burns of Canastota, R. D.; Mrs. Harry Gardener of Lafayette, and Mrs. Sarah Albro of East Syracuse; two sons, Luther of Syracuse and Robert Franklin of Albany; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted in the Charles P. Cline Funeral Home, East Syracuse, at 2 P.M. Friday by the Rev. Lisle Caldwell of Christ Episcopal Church, Manlius. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 P.M. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. tomorrow.
