John Ruel EVANS Sr. was born December 20, 1820, the son of Hezekiah EVANS & Sarah MOORE). His Son, John Ruel EVANS Jr. also served with the Bulloch Troop.
From Lloyd Leslie EVANS of Newington GA, Evans Family historian (The Evans Family of Screven County, Georgia, 1982, 140 pp): John Ruel EVANS Sr. ... was born in Screven Co., Ga., eldest child of Hezekiah and Sarah (Moore) EVANS. He was reared on the 'old home place' near Jarrell Pond which was part of the land purchased by his grandfather Reuel EVANS in 1801. He grew up receiving the best education the family could give him. The early families in Screven County either had a tutor in their homes, or as a community operated school for a short period each year. This usually was in the fall after crops were gathered, extending through the winter months until in the spring when it was planting time again. Production of crops in those days was dependent on manual labor for planting, cultivating and harvesting. We found evidence in several places where his father was working for better educational opportunities in those pioneer days.
