Services for Mary Ruth Deering, 93, of Lamesa, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at First Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Larry Brownfield officiating. Interment will follow at Lamesa Memorial Park.

She died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Avalon Place in Odessa. Mary Ruth Duke was born Sept. 10, 1911, in Stamford. She married Ernest A. Deering Sept. 5, 1929, in Erick, Okla. He preceded her in death in 1969.

Ms. Deering had been a member of the First Baptist Church since 1957. She graduated from Texas Tech in 1957 and started teaching in Lamesa. She taught third grade at V.Z. Rogers Elementary and North Elementary. She taught second grade Sunday School class for over 20 years at the First Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and the Dawson Co. Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of Kappa Kappa Iota and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an active member of O.A.S.I.S. and always brought Mrs. Smiths pies to the O.A.S.I.S. meetings. She was active in the womens Missionary Union. She even took boys to Camp Plains Baptist Assembly as a Royal Ambassador Leader. She was an avid supporter of Lamesa High School Athletics, especially football and basketball. She loved the Dallas Cowboys until Tom Landry left. She loved Southern Gospel Music and had a love for ceramics and Mrs. Smiths Pecan pies. Most of all she was a great inspiration to many of her students who went on to become teachers themselves.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Edwin Deering, in 1937.
Survivors include daughters, Ernees Brownfield and husband, Ken, of Lubbock, Texas and Martha J. Lucas and husband, Paul, of Odessa, Texas; sons, James Deering and wife, Barbara, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and John Deering and wife, Dana, of Odessa, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
