Jacob E. Himes

Jacob E. Himes, 91, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank F. Jones, in Rose township, Payne county, Oklahoma, February 17, 1936. The home is three miles east of Glencoe.

Funeral services were held at teh Glencoe Methodist Episcopal church at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Dittmar officiating. Burial was at Fairlawn cemetery under direction of the Strode Funeral home.
A veteran of the Civil war, Himes proudly recalled that he twice voted for Abraham Lincoln for president. The aged Payne county citizen was born in Marion county, Illinois, on December 19, 1844.

He was married to Sarah J. Walm December 15, 1867, at Knoxville, Ia. Her death occurred in 1876. Three children survive the marriage, namely Francis E. Himes, Amarillo, Tex.; William H. Himes, Glencoe, and Mrs. W.O. Broyles, Stillwater.
On August 23, 1877, Himes married Matilda B. Smith at Tracy, Ia. The Himes family moved to Oklahoma in 1891 and settled near old Clayton in Payne county. In 1893, Himes made the run into the Cherokee Strip an dlocated near Glencoe where he has since lived. He joined the Methodist church in 1910.

There were two daughters by the second marriage, Effie Ann Himes, who died in September, 1893, and Mrs. F.P. Jones, of Glencoe. Mrs. Matilda Himes died January 2, 1928. All of the children were present during Himes' last illness, excepting Francis.
There are fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. One brother, Powell Himes, of Oscaloosa, Ia., is living.

Jacob E. Himes lived in Illinois until 3 years of age, moving then with his parents to near Knoxville, Ia. He was a corporal of Capt. John J. Lambert's Co. 1, Ninth regiment of Iowa Cavalry Volunteers, enrolled on November 20, 1863, and discharged on March 15, 1866, at Little Rock, Ark.
