Funeral Services for R J Hodges, Jr. are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 20, 2013 at First Baptist Church in College Station, with Dr. Malcolm Bane and Reverend Troy Allen officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, April 19, 2013 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station, Texas. R J passed away early Wednesday morning at the Hospice Brazos Valley Inpatient Facility in Bryan. Interment will be in the College Station City Cemetery.
R J was born April 21, 1921 to Linnie Coward and Roy Joe Hodges in Pottsboro, Texas. He graduated from Childress High School in 1937 and entered Texas A&M, graduating in 1941. He was a proud member of the Corp of Cadets.
He was hired as the Assistant County Agent in Floresville, Texas in 1942 and was promoted to the County Agricultural Agent in Gonzales, Texas in 1942. R J then moved to Victoria as County Agent and a year later became the Manager for the Smiley Chicken CO-OP. He then moved to Weslaco as the Extension Agronomist and then to Bryan, working as Extension Agronomist for Texas A&M, with responsibilities focusing on rice and other Agronomic crops. In 1962 he moved to Nacogdoches to serve as the District Extension Agent, before moving to Richmond, Texas as District Agent for 5 years. In 1967, he returned to College Station and served as District Agricultural Agent until his retirement in 1980.
R J served his country during World War II, serving in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He also was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in College Station. He was an avid fan of Aggie Sports, in particular, Aggie Football and Basketball. He enjoyed attending all of the games that he could with the wonderful group of friends he had made throughout the years attending games.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice Hodges on October 16, 2000; one brother, Richard Hodges; and one sister, Billie Ullom.
R J is survived by his daughter, Sharon Fox of College Station; two grandchildren, Seth Flowers and his wife Katie, and Shannon Flowers, all of College Station; two great-grandchildren Jack Flowers and Madeline Flowers, of College Station; two sisters, Helen Gay of North Carolina, and Frances Weatherbee and her husband Orville of Childress, Texas; and a host of other family and friends.
Our family would like to acknowledge and thank all of the friends and neighbors that were so helpful and caring to our family.
