Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Philippine-American War as a Private in Company H, 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the MOH for his bravery in the Philippine Islands on May 16, 1899, with Young's Scouts. His citation reads: "With 21 other scouts charged across a burning bridge, under heavy fire, and completely routed 600 of the enemy who were entrenched in a strongly fortified position." His Medal was awarded to him on June 6, 1906.
